A Very Fond Farewell

We are very sorry to announce that our wonderful Nurse Manager, Julie Wood (left), has made the difficult decision to step down from her role due to ill health.

Julie loved working for Kate’s and it was a difficult decision for her to leave. We will really miss her nursing expertise but we will also miss Julie the personality; she is such a bright, cheerful and positive person. We are incredibly grateful for her dedication, compassion and leadership during her time with Kate’s Home Nursing. She has made a lasting difference to patients, families and colleagues alike, and we send her our very best wishes for her health and future.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to registered nurse, Emily Guest, who stepped in to temporarily manage the team and did a fantastic job.

We are now delighted to welcome Fiona Eggerton as our new Nurse Manager. Fiona is a registered nurse and Queen’s Nurse, with experience in trauma and orthopaedics. She has worked in Birmingham, Manchester, Australia and France. Since returning from her travels, Fiona has worked as a District Nurse in the North Cotswolds before becoming a Specialist Practitioner in District Nursing and an Independent Non-Medical Prescriber.

For the last six years, Fiona has worked as a Community Matron in the NHS Ageing Well team, during which time she also worked as a Nurse Co-ordinator with Kate’s Home Nursing.

Fiona said:

“I believe it is so important to enable people to remain at home for their end-of-life care, if that is their wish. In embracing the philosophy of Kate’s, I look forward enthusiastically to my new role within an amazing team.”

January 2025 News

Firstly, happy New Year to you all. As we enter 2025, we’d like to reflect on how our hospice at home and bereavement services helped the local community in 2024 and to let you know a little about our plans for the coming year.

A Fond Farewell

Karen Penigilly, outgoing CEO, Kate's Home Nursing

At the end of 2024, we said a fond goodbye to Karen Pengilley, who has been CEO for Kate’s Home Nursing for ten years. We would like to thank Karen for her unwavering dedication and commitment and now wish her very happy retirement.

Welcome

We welcome Helen Makaritis as the successor to this role. Helen brings a wealth of charity experience to her new role, having been at the helm of sister charity, Campden Home Nursing for over nine years. There, she was instrumental in the charity’s tremendous growth and success, and she is now looking forward to drawing on her skills and experience to further strengthen Kate’s Home Nursing. She said: “I’ve received such a warm welcome from everyone here and am proud and excited to be involved in such a well-loved and supported local charity.”

What we achieved in 2024

This year, we have provided over 6,323 hospice at home nursing hours, which equates to 700 nursing shifts. Our bereavement services have supported 60 patients this year through phone calls and we have regular attendance of around 20 guests at our bereavement cafes each month.

Like many other charities and hospices across the UK, we are experiencing increased expenditure to provide our our care. We need to raise of £600,000 to provide our hospice at home services FREE of charge to the local community. Last year, we did not cover these costs. Read on to find out how you help us. We really appreciate your continued support.
